Two games can both be visual novels and ask very different things of the reader. One may offer only occasional dialogue choices. Another may branch repeatedly and encourage replaying. Here is how to compare them without a walkthrough.
Linear stories
A linear visual novel follows a largely fixed narrative. You may still choose dialogue or interact with the presentation without redirecting the main story. The appeal can be the writing, art, performance, or pacing rather than navigating a branching structure.
Light choices
Some decisions personalize responses or smaller scenes. They can help you define a protagonist even when they do not lead to a separate route. A catalog should avoid promising a completely different story for every dialogue option.
Character routes
A route is a sustained narrative path, often focused on a particular character or relationship. Some games ask you to select a route directly. Others use earlier decisions to guide you toward one.
