How we rank and recommend visual novels
Our lists help readers compare stories and find an official edition. They cover games in our catalog and do not claim to represent every visual novel ever released.
Best visual novels: editorial picks
Editors select a range of stories, genres, reading lengths, and ways to play. Each selection includes a reason to consider it. Position reflects the editorial reading guide, rather than a calculated community score. Paid submissions do not buy a position, and we do not claim personal playthroughs that have not taken place.
Most popular visual novels: participation
The popularity list orders individual works by the selected source's all-time participation count. VNDB counts people who have rated a work; Steam counts reviews of a particular application. These are different measures and are never added together. A cumulative count does not measure this week's momentum or the number of copies sold.
Top-rated visual novels: scores with a minimum sample
Games need at least 500 ratings or reviews from the selected source. VNDB lists use its Bayesian rating, displayed on a ten-point scale. Steam lists use the percentage of positive reviews. Ties are ordered by participation count, then source ID. The 500-vote threshold is our editorial rule, not a guarantee that a score is representative.
Sources and matching editions
We match VNDB IDs to individual works and Steam App IDs to the official edition linked on a game's page. Collections and editions containing several works are labeled separately and excluded from the numerical work rankings. We do not assign a collection's score to each story it contains. Missing scores stay missing.
Steam summaries include all languages and all purchase types, with off-topic review activity excluded. These choices can produce totals different from a storefront's default view. See the Steam review API documentation and VNDB field definitions.
Updates and corrections
Steam reviews are checked weekly. VNDB currently uses a dated editorial snapshot of publicly displayed data. Pages identify their source and the oldest snapshot used in the displayed list. If a source fails, we retain its last successful result. Snapshots older than two weeks are labeled as the latest available data. Newly discovered games enter editorial review before publication.
Some VNDB snapshots include a vote average without a verified Bayesian score. We label these as an average on game pages and exclude them from the top-rated list. Their verified participation count can still qualify for the popularity list.
Content and availability
We check the linked edition's language, platforms, and release status. A free demo does not qualify as a complete free game. Short-game lists use the reading-time evidence recorded for that edition. Mature themes are identified in content notes; explicitly sexual editions are excluded. A cover image alone does not determine a game's content rating.
Data attribution
Where displayed, VNDB database information is attributed to The Visual Novel Database and provided under the Open Database License, with individual database contents under its applicable contents license. The VNDB rating data used on this site is available as a download. Game artwork and publisher descriptions retain their own rights; our editorial copy is written separately.
